Arthur F.
Saunders
Nov 29, 1930 — Oct 19, 2026
Arthur F. Saunders, age 95, of Springfield, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at his home on October 19, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and laughter among those fortunate enough to have known him.
Born in Philadelphia, Art proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard. In 1951, he joined the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 85, beginning a lifelong career as a union carpenter. He took great pride in his trade and remained dedicated to his craft until retirement.
Art married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Patricia C. Saunders, who preceded him in death in 2015. Together, they shared a lifelong passion for dogs, raising and showing both standard and toy poodles. Following his retirement from carpentry, Art turned that passion into a second career as a professional dog groomer. Their dogs were more than pets; they were cherished members of their family.
More than 40 years ago, Art and Pat met JoAnn Sapp at the law office where she worked, beginning a friendship that would grow into a lifelong family bond. Over the decades, JoAnn became like a daughter to them, sharing in life's happiest moments and most difficult times. Their relationship was a beautiful example of how family is not always defined by blood, but by love and devotion.
In his later years, Art's greatest joy was his beloved little dog, Coco. More than a companion, she was his family, his constant source of comfort, and the center of his world. The two were inseparable, sharing their days together and finding happiness in the simplest moments. To Art, there was nothing quite like the unconditional love of a dog, and Coco returned that love with unwavering devotion. Fittingly, she remained by his side when he peacefully passed away, just as she had throughout their life together. Though Art is no longer here to hold her, the extraordinary bond they shared will always be a beautiful part of his story. After all, some of life's greatest loves come with four paws and a wagging tail.
A resident of Springfield Township for more than 60 years, Art was surrounded by an extraordinary community of neighbors who became an extension of his family. George and Melissa Kent and their daughters, Morgan and Laura, welcomed him into their lives, sharing holidays, dinners, and countless memories. To them, Art was an honorary grandfather. Jim and Nancy Murray were equally caring, offering friendship, kindness, and support throughout his later years. At a time when such close-knit neighborhoods seem increasingly rare, Art was fortunate to be surrounded by people who understood the importance of looking out for one another, especially older members of their community. Their compassion and genuine friendship meant more than words could express.
Art had a wonderful sense of humor and loved sharing stories from his long and remarkable life, even if those closest to him had heard a few of them more than once. One of his favorites was the story of his birthday. Born at home on November 26, 1930, the day before Thanksgiving, Art would often explain how the holiday resulted in his birth certificate listing November 29 instead. A true gentleman with a generous heart and old-fashioned manners, Art never lost his sense of courtesy. Even at 95, he insisted that ladies go first. His kindness, humor, and unforgettable stories will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Art was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia C. Saunders. He is survived by a nephew, Daniel Connor III; a niece, Shawn Alee Coats; and his dear friends Tim and JoAnn Sapp and their family. He leaves behind his beloved Coco and the many neighbors and friends whose lives were enriched by his friendship.
After more than a decade apart, Art is reunited with his beloved Pat. Together, they will be laid to rest alongside the cherished dogs who brought them so much happiness throughout their lives.
A life well lived, a heart generously shared, and a gentleman who will never be forgotten.
Funeral services and burial will be held privately.
