Ashton Ernest Gilmore, Jr., age 86, passed away peacefully at Paoli Hospital on September 11, 2025. Born in Belfast, Maine, on October 24, 1938, Ashton was a man who embraced life with an unwavering spirit and a deep appreciation for learning. He graduated from The High Mowing School in Wilton, NH, where he cultivated a lifelong love for knowledge and personal growth. After completing his education, Ashton proudly served his country in the United States Army, demonstrating his commitment to service and sacrifice. Following his military career, he became a skilled pipefitter, belonging to Pipefitters Local Union 788 in Kittery, ME. where he worked on numerous Navy vessels at the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard. His civil service career eventually led him to Panama, where he worked for several years on the Panama Canal. Ash eventually returned stateside and continued practicing his skills at Mare Island Naval Ship Yard, where he proudly served as Union Shop Steward. When Mare Island closed he retired after 26 years of civil service. He was known as a fierce advocate for hard working people. A lifelong learner, Ashton found joy in books and music, and he cherished the memories created during his travels, particularly on cruises with his son David, and family friend Linda Laudano. His spirit of adventure and curiosity will be remembered fondly by those who knew him. Ashton was predeceased by his father Ashton E. Gilmore Sr., his mother, Emerald Abrams, and his dear sisters, Joyce Kecy Johnson, Carolyn Albee, and Darline Johnson. His youngest sister, Diana Brauer lives in Knoxville, TN. He is survived by his children, Holly Martin (Tim), Annie Tarr, and David Gilmore, along with his seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews that he was very fond of. Funeral services and burial will be held privately for family and close friends. In honoring his memory, we invite all who knew Ashton to celebrate his life and the memories he leaves behind.
