Obituary

Barbara C. Black, 89, of Aston passed away at her residence on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Born and raised in New Bedford Massachusetts, she was a graduate of North Dartmouth High School. She went on to become a registered nurse specializing in the Operating Room, graduating from Saint Lukes School of Nursing. Following her graduation she worked at Saint Lukes Hospital before moving on to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital where she would eventually retire. During her time in New Bedford, Barbara was a member of the Salvation Army and played in their band. She would continue as a member of the Salvation Army when she moved to Pennsylvania, attending the Philadelphia Citadel Corp. with her husband. Barbara traveled with the Salvation Army to London where they would perform and record an album. Barbara's traveling continued, spending time in Greece, The Caribbean, California, The United Kingdom, and various other parts of Europe. She always liked to stay busy and keep an active mind, working on the newspaper's daily crossword, Jumble, Sudoku, and playing Boggle. Barbara also loved to read, she particularly enjoyed Mystery novels, but she read many books from numerous authors such as; Stephen King, James Patterson, John Grisham, and Nora Roberts. Barbara was a devout Christian, participating in many church choirs over the years. In her later years, Barbara enjoyed taking her "little drives" with her son Bryan, listening to jazz music as they went. She also liked taking walks along the scenic Chester Creek Nature Trail. Barbara was the daughter of the late Grandville Cocker and Dorothy (Parkinson) Cocker, and wife of the late Roy Black (1999) Survivors: Children: Bryan Jones and Cheryl Garraty, Grandchildren: Matthew (Angel), Erik, and Emily Garraty, Great-Grandchildren: Riley and Meilani, Step-Children: Russell Black, Robin Fenton (Mark), and Roy Black, Jr. (Lucille), Barbara is also survived by her beloved Step-Grandchild, Chelsea, whom affectionately referred to Barbara as "Big Mommy". Visitation: Tuesday, May 7, 2024, 10:00am-11:00am at Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home, 5980 Chichester Ave., Aston, PA 19014. Funeral Service: Tuesday, May 7, 2024, 11:00am at Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home. Burial: Private.
