Doris Maxey Krescanko, age 90, formerly of Upper Chichester, passed away peacefully on March 1st , 2026 after a long struggle with vascular dementia.
Born on October 24, 1935 to Earl and Susan Straehle, Doris was a very lucky baby. Coming into this world weighing just a little over 2 pounds, she was initially cared for in a shoe box. Doris survived that early challenge - and the trials of being the youngest of 7 children - and lived to flourish as the loving wife and business partner to her husband, John Maxey, in their food business, Maxey's American Catering. John was always grateful for how much Doris could get accomplished and the speed with which she moved, and nicknamed her "Smokey" for the trail of accomplishments she left in her wake.
Doris and John would go on to have 4 children together - Susan Ikeler (Tom), Ann Iacono (Ralph), John Maxey (Mary), and Dave Maxey (Gail) - who in turn gave them 10 grandchildren, who in turn bestowed upon them 12 great grandchildren. She was devoted to her family who loved her deeply, and her memory and life spirit will be forever cherished.
When her children reached adulthood, Doris needed to find another path to care for and nurture others, and so at age 45, bravely set out to attend nursing school, and then became a LPN at Riddle Hospital. After her beloved husband contracted leukemia in 1983, she put her love and training to the most sacred of all human endeavors, as she cared for and nursed him until he passed away on Christmas Day, 1985.
She remarried in 1987 to Joseph Krescanko and welcomed his adult children, Sharon and Michael, into the family. Doris and Joe moved to Millsboro, Delaware not long after, where she enjoyed the ocean, playing dominoes during family visits, reading, puzzling, baking her world famous strombolis for family gatherings, "getting her steps in" during neighborhood walks, and hosting Christmas parties for family, friends and neighbors.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 9,2026 from 9:15-10:15am at St. Joseph's Church 3255 Concord Rd., Aston, PA 19014, followed by a Funeral Mass for Doris being celebrated at 10:30am at St. Joseph's Church. Burial: Immaculate Heart of Mary Cemetery, Linwood, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund. This organization ensures that 100% of all public donations go directly to research aimed at finding a cure for Alzheimer's and related vascular dementias.
