Doris J. Miller (née Herd), age 96, passed away peacefully and beautifully on October 20, 2026 at Riddle Memorial Hospital, enveloped in the love of her devoted family. Born in the nation's capital of Washington, DC, Doris spent her early childhood years there before moving to Chester, Pennsylvania, where her bright spirit began to bloom.
Doris was educated with care, attending St. Michael's Parochial School and later graduating from Notre Dame Catholic School in Moylan. Doris raised her family in Boothwyn and for the past several decades she has lived in Brookhaven.
To say Doris loved life would be an understatement; she embraced every single day with unparalleled enthusiasm, a sparkling wit, and a touch of daring adventure. During her memorable time in Dania, Florida, she reigned supreme as the community's champion bocce ball player while pulling double duty as their fiercely protective and beloved volunteer security guard, keeping her neighbors safe and smiling. Doris brought an energetic bounce to her community as a fitness instructor at Curves Fitness and shared her deeply compassionate heart as a dedicated candy striper at Sacred Heart Hospital.
A woman of immense joy and rhythm, Doris could frequently be found dancing the night away at the Knights of Columbus dances or passionately cheering on her beloved Philadelphia sports teams. She loved the thrill of a friendly card game, whether making memories during family game nights or playing a clever hand of poker. Her social calendar was beautifully full as an active member of the Holy Savior Mothers Club, embarking on countless fun-filled vacation excursions with her dearest friends.
Doris possessed an extraordinary, fearless zest for life. She proudly took the crown as the winner of the Delaware Park Mother's Day Horse Race. Yet, out of all her grand adventures, her absolute favorite was spending a "Lifetime of Memories" with family and friends at White House Beach, Delaware. Her family was, without question, her absolute pride, her greatest joy, and her entire world. Doris was also a woman of steadfast faith and a longtime, cherished parishioner of Our Lady of Charity Church in Brookhaven.
She is reunited in heaven with her beloved parents, Andrew and Clara (Wood) Herd; her cherished husband of 53 years, Carlton Miller (who passed away in 2000); her deeply missed son, Robert Miller; her late brother, Thomas Herd; and her loyal, sweet companion cockapoo, Ginger, who undoubtedly greeted her with a wagging tail.
Doris leaves behind a rich legacy of love, laughter, and beautiful memories. She is survived by her beloved children, Deborah Monaco, Anita Kennedy (Bill),Rita Macknis (Michael), Paul Miller (Lezinette); her dear siblings, Andrew and David Herd, Patty Abbott, and Valerie Tulli; her adored grandchildren, Kenny, Neil, Carl, Jeff, Billy, Cessalie, Candace, and Julie; and her precious great-grandchildren, Lila, Parker, Ryan, Greyson, Celine, Caden, and Chloe.
