Obituary

Dorothy M. Bowers, age 90, passed away on March 23, 2018 at Rockland Place in Wilmington. Born December 17, 1927 in Philadelphia and raised in Yeadon, PA, Dorothy graduated in 1945 from Notre Dame High School in Moylan, PA.  This is where she met her lifelong friends who called themselves the Sorority Sisters. She moved to Wilmington, DE in 1951 when her husband went to work for the DuPont Company and together they became founding parishioners of St. Mary Magdalen Church.

Throughout her life, Dorothy dedicated her life to her family and their many activities. She volunteered her time with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Archmere Academy where she was head of the Mother's Guild, Padua Academy and many other organizations. She found great joy in arts and crafts, so much so that she often gave classes to teach others to craft with her longtime friend, Othell Heaney. She sewed, crocheted, and knitted but her favorite talent was painting. There wasn't a surface or object that she wouldn't paint. Dorothy was a member of the Doll Club of Delaware, having a collection of hundreds of dolls. She was an avid garage sale attendee and often would turn trash into treasure through her unique crafting skills.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dr. George Bowers III, her son, George Russell Bowers; her parents Russell Thomas and Gertrude Figenshu and her brother Thomas R. Figenshu.

She is survived by her daughters and sons: Patricia A. Plytynski (Stanley), Joseph C. Bowers (Lane), James T. Bowers (Rebecca), Kathleen M. Ventresca (Vincent); 12 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

VISITATION: Tuesday, April 3rd from 10:00-10:45 am at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 7 Sharpley Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. FUNERAL MASS: Tuesday, April 3rd at 11:00 am at St. Mary Magdalen Church. BURIAL: All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.
