Obituary

Eugene Gifford Grace 3rd died on Saturday July 1, 2023. He was known as "Pops" to his family and "Gene" to all others, and was a true gentleman and gentle soul in every sense. Gene attended boarding school from the early age of eight through high school (North Country Day School, St. Marks, the Hill School), and followed this with several years of service in the United States Army stationed in Germany. Following his military service, Gene began a long career of volunteer and activist work. Among the organizations he worked with were International House Philadelphia, Riverbend Environmental Education Center, and Episcopal Family Services. Perhaps his fondest work was his last volunteer job at the James Rhodes Elementary School in West Philadelphia where he helped young students with literacy and educational development. Gene's work at the James Rhodes School was recognized by the Philadelphia Superintendent of Schools, as well as the faculty, staff and students of the school. The school library was named after him in recognition of his work and devotion to the students and school. Another of Gene's passions was exercising, especially biking and running. Once he started down this path, he could hardly stop, When his asthma prevented him from being outdoors, he could be found indoors exercising for hours on stationary equipment, sometimes going through two movies at a time. With the arrival of his four grandchildren, Gene began telling jokes and limericks to them on a daily basis. He already loved books and now focused on reading every children's joke book out there, as well as making them up himself (with mixed success). He soon started sharing his treasure trove of jokes and limericks with the world and would tell them to anyone who would listen. If you were ever in the Wayne Farmers Market, or anywhere else you could find Gene, you probably already know this. Gene is survived by his beloved wife of thirty nine years, Jolinda; his children Alix, Andrea and spouse Mark, and Gene and wife Chung-Hi; his four grandchildren Dylan, Luke, Wyatt and Zeze; his brothers Charles (wife Betsy) Brewster (wife Annie) and Michael (wife Susan), and Jolinda's brother, Guy (wife Cindy); step-brothers William Howard (wife Lyn) and Edgar Howard (wife Bebe) as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and their families, and everyone that ever had the pleasure of hearing one of his jokes. A service in celebration of Gene will be held on Saturday July 29 at Radnor Friends Meeting, 610 Conestoga Road, Villanova, Pennsylvania at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Radnor Friends Meeting. Finally, the family asks in honor of Gene that you tell someone a joke (good or bad) and add a little kindness and laughter into the world as he did every day of his life.
