Harry F. Whitby, (Midge), age 93, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2015 at his home in Claymont, DE surrounded by his loving family. Harry was born and raised in Trainer and has been a resident of Claymont for 65 years. Harry dedicated the majority of his career as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service in Claymont retiring in 1984. Previously, he owned and operated the Sinclair gas station in Ogden. Harry was a longtime devoted parishioner of Holy Rosary Church. He was a dedicated volunteer during church events and assisted in managing Holy Rosary's Bingo program for over three decades. He also volunteered with the St. Mark's Fathers Club. Due to Harry's continuous service, he was the recipient of the Order of Merit for his outstanding contribution to the Diocese of Wilmington presented by Bishop Saltarelli. Harry enjoyed bowling and was a member of several bowling leagues well into his eighties. His hobbies included gardening and attending his grandchildren's recitals and athletic events. He was an avid New York Yankee Baseball fan.
He was a loving husband of 63 years to the late Mae E. Gavin Whitby (2013) whose romance lasted over seventy years and who was the love of his life. Harry was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great grandfather who enjoyed spending time with family. Harry served in the US Army during WWII with the 78th Infantry Division where he received the American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and a World War II victory medal.
He was the son of the late Howard and Anna Lahrochar Whitby, and brother of the late Howard Whitby, Verma Mangold, Mabel Lyttle, and Charles Dehner.
SURVIVORS: loving daughters: Karen W. Hacker (Joseph), Maribeth Collings, and Debbie Whitby-Norman (Steve); 9 grandchildren: Kari Hacker (Justin Brown), Kelly Hacker (Chris Kelly), Kate Hacker, Kim Gehrmann (Michael), and Kasey DeSantis (Anthony), Heather Stiebel (Jason), Ryan Beaston (Alyssa), Stephanie Norman McDonald (Jon), and Justin Norman; and 9 great grandchildren: Addison, Audrey, Ashlee, and Alexis Kelly, Joshua and Matthew Stiebel, Lily, Ryder, and Jace Beaston.
VISITATION: Saturday from 12:30pm to 1:15pm at Holy Rosary Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703.
Funeral Mass: Saturday 1:30pm at Holy Rosary Church.
BURIAL: St. Joseph's on The Brandywine Cemetery, Greenville.
In lieu of flowers: donations may be made in Harry's name to Holy Rosary Church Food Pantry at the above church address.
