Obituary

John Patrick Lavin Sr., 82, of Ridley Township passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family. The son of the late Michael and Ann Lavin, John was born and raised in Philadelphia. He later moved to Ridley township with his wife Cecelia (Penny) to reside in Woodlyn and raise a family.

John graduated from St. Thomas More Catholic High School for Boys. Before joining the Carpenters Union in 1967, he worked in civil engineering as a surveyor. He went on to dedicate 32 years to Carpenters Union Local 845, where he built a lasting legacy through his skill, leadership, and commitment to his fellow members.

As a union carpenter, John helped construct the iconic Veterans Stadium, a project he took pride in. Throughout his career, he served in several leadership roles, including President of Local 845. Later, he set aside his tools to serve the union as an Organizer and then as a Business Agent for local 845. He retired in 1999 after a distinguished career marked by hard work, integrity, and dedication.

John was a big sports fan, especially the Philadelphia Eagles. He loved fishing and crabbing trips with family and friends. He enjoyed being part of the Overbrook dart league. He was an amazing cook and made the best ever garlic bread and clams! He loved summer cookouts and vacations with his family. Of all the things he loved, his family was the most important part of his life. His family was everything to him!

He was the loving husband to Cecelia (Penny) Lavin, the father of Susan Lavin Lucci, John Patrick Lavin Jr. (Joanna), Kevin Michael Lavin (Michelle). He was "Pop" to five grandchildren, Matthew Lucci (Victoria), Brett Lucci (Steffany), Sean Lucci, Jaimee (Lavin) Irvello (Mark), John Patrick Lavin III (Fanny), and three great grandchildren, Mark, Pasquale (PJ), and Enzo Irvello. He is also survived by two brothers, Daniel Lavin (Kathy) and Dennis Lavin (Jeannie), and several close brother and sister in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his sisters Joanne, Theresa, Francis, and brothers Michael and Thomas, and niece Theresa (Tish).
