Obituary

Joseph Harry Burns, Jr, age 90 , of Claymont, DE passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2015. In his death, as in life, he wanted to stay close to his recently deceased wife of 67 years, Eleanor (December 26, 2014).

Joe was born January 19, 1925 in Chester, PA, son of the late Joseph Harry and Mary May (Hall) Burns, Sr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Knapp Burns, brother George Davis, sisters Marion Rowan, Anna Wright and Mary Burns.

Joe attended Claymont High School, University of Delaware and was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He worked for many years at the Sun Oil Company as a purchasing supervisor until his retirement. Joe was a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge throughout his life and earned many titles such as Worshipful Joseph Burns Past Master of Granite Lodge, Worshipful Master of Corinthian Lodge (1968, 1988, 1989 in Wilmington & Talleyville), Grand Sword Bearer of the Grand Lodge in Delaware (1970), 32nd Day Scottish Rite Mason and Noble at Nur Shrine Temple. Joe was passionate about helping others in the community and touched many lives through his position as Grand Guardian of Jobs Daughters in Delaware.

Most important to Joe was his family. He was an avid golfer and bowler, but he treasured time spent with his wife Eleanor, traveling and playing card games. Joe will always be remembered as a pillar of the Claymont community and a talented pie maker.

Joe is survived by his 3 beautiful daughters Sandi Phillips, Sheryl L. Croce (Al), and Joanne M. Jones, his sister-in-law Jean F. Wheatley and loving niece, Marsha Hession. Joe adored his 13 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. He never missed a dance recital, gymnastics meet, soccer or field hockey game for his grandchildren. He cherished family gatherings and always ensured that a visit included a tight hug, an expression of how proud he was of us with an "I love you, baby".

The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of the Milton and Hattie Kutz Home for the years of loving care provided to Joe.

Visitation: Tuesday from 9:30-10:30am at The United Methodist Church of the Atonement, 3519 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, De 19703, followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00am.
