Obituary

Born Judith Elaine Twesten, daughter of Charles and Inez Twesten of Norwood, Pennsylvania, on November 2, 1946. Judy was raised in Norwood, loving every minute of her spectacular childhood. With younger brother Bob, cousin/best friend Sue Foreaker Francis, and Sue's younger brother Eddie at her side, Judy spent summers at the Twesten family home in Wildwood, N.J., and was never without her wide yet very close circle of friends. Judy was Head Majorette in the Interboro High School Marching Band and in 1964 she was crowned Norwood's Miss Sweetheart. Judy graduated from Interboro in 1964 and then attended Goldey Beacom Junior College. In 1966 Judy married W. David Eckard III, a graduate of Ridley High School and Pennsylvania Military College and an active-duty officer in the United States Army. After their first assignment in Aberdeen, Maryland, Dave received orders taking he and Judy to Wurzburg, Germany, where in 1968 Judy gave birth to their first son, Glenn. With Dave working extended duty hours, Judy often recounted the adventures she and Glenn went on, as she would put him in an old-fashioned car seat next to her in her little VW Bug, and set about exploring West Germany. Tales of those early days as an Army wife and young mother never failed to bring a smile to her face, and were greatly treasured. When Dave received orders to ship out to Viet Nam as a newly promoted Captain, Judy and Glenn returned home, taking an apartment in the Glencroft Apartments in Folcroft. Upon Dave's return from the war, they lived briefly in Prospect Park before purchasing their first home in Ridley Park. In 1972 Judy gave birth to her second son, Mark. Judy, Dave and their two boys loved living across the street from the Ridley Lake, with Judy busy chauffeuring Glenn and Mark to their activities, sewing drapes, Halloween costumes, and other assorted items, and generally becoming a world-class cook. No one ever went hungry in a kitchen run by Judy Eckard. Having been raised attending St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Norwood, Judy, Dave, and the boys - along with Judy's parents Charles and Inez and Dave's parents Bill and Phyllis - all maintained their membership at St. Stephens until shifting to Christ Church Ridley Park in the early 80's. Later in life Judy would shift again to become a member at Christ Church Media, where she made many more friends and was an active member of the Altar Guild. Judy's family thanks Reverend Ernest M. Galaz, Rector of Christ Church Media, for his support and care for Judy. Judy was a life-long avid learner, returning to college as an adult student and graduating from Widener University with her Bachelors in Arts, summa cum laude, in 1986, and then her Masters Degree in 1998. Through the late 80's into the 2000's, Judy taught both History and English at Ridley High School, making many, many friends who always remained near and dear to her heart. Judy treasured her years as part of the Ridley family of teachers, and often recounted her experiences there as some of the best of her life. While Dave and Judy's marriage ultimately ended in divorce they remained friends and active co-parents to Glenn and Mark, with Dave and his second wife Diane even attending Judy's second wedding. Judy was an active and devoted grandmother to Glenn and his wife Lisa's two sons David and Justin, and Mark's daughter Campbell. Judy loved her grandchildren with an intensity and depth of passion which will never be forgotten, always there for birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions, and could usually be found in the stands or auditorium to watch them excel in their various sports, music, theatre, and other extra-curricular events. Judy passed gracefully from this life on Saturday March 15, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. In the final stage of her fight she was steadfastly cared for by friends and family alike, most especially including her beloved best friend and cousin, Sue Francis, who traveled up from her home in Florida to spend several months with Judy, enjoying the moment, and reminiscing about fun times gone by. Judy will be remembered with love by all those who knew and loved her, for her laughter, innocent sense of humor, generosity of spirit, intelligence, compassion, love of art and nature, and so much more. Judith Elaine Twesten Eckard Rehm was a beautiful, beautiful soul, and while her passing leaves a hole which will never be filled, her memory will live in our hearts forever.
