IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marlene
Cardile
August 29, 1931 – December 20, 2019
Marlene A. Cardile (Ewachiw), age 88, of Boothwyn passed away peacefully on December 20, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She is now reunited in heaven with her beloved husband Samuel J. Cardile, Jr., daughter Linda A. Mooney and son Samuel J. Cardile III.
Marlene was also predeceased by her parents Walter and Edna (Keilmann) Ewachiw and sister Shirlene Urbine (Lee). Left to cherish her memory are her devoted son and daughter-in-law John Cardile (Bethann McClure), son-in-law David Mooney, grandchildren Rachael Schweizer (David) and Melinda Violet, great-grandchildren Amanda Linn and Alexander Schweizer, brother Eugene Ewachiw (Gloria), sisters Deanna Fredella (Frank) and Laurene Taylor (Louis), sister-in-law Rita Shelanski (Morris), as well as, cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
The oldest of five children, Marlene was born and raised in Chester by Walter Ewachiw, a first generation American born Ukranian and Edna (Keilmann) Ewachiw of German and Irish descent. Marlene attended Chester High School receiving almost every scholastic honor. Earning a full scholarship, she attended the Chester Hospital School of Nursing and completed the program a member of the last graduating class achieving honors as a top academic student. Now Crozer Hospital, her photo demonstrating the use of an iron lung can be found in the main hallway documenting the hospital's history. Marlene remained a proud active member of the Chester Hospital Nurses Alumni and continued to care for others throughout her life. While a nursing student, Marlene met the love of her life Sam Cardile who she knew the first time they met that "he was the one". Marlene and Sam married and had three children, Linda, Sammy and John who they raised in their Boothwyn home on Scott Avenue. Together they ran their business Cardile's mushrooms with Sam "The Mushroom Man" the purveyor and "Mar" managing the books. Their home was filled with love and laughter as they spent time with their large families and extended family of friends. Marlene enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, as well as, sewing and knitting outfits for them to wear or wrap themselves in. When her daughter Linda had two daughters of her own, Rachael and Melinda, Marlene became a primary fixture in their lives assisting in raising them and teaching them to bake, crochet, cross stitch and develop a love for plants and mystery novels which she was an avid reader of. Marlene and Sam unexpectedly lost their oldest son Sammy, 24, in 1983 and never fully recovered from the heartbreak of losing their child. In the years following, they retired from the mushroom business and spent time together continuing to care for one another and cherishing time with their family and friends until Sam passed away with his Mar by his side in 2003. Marlene continued to spend time with her family and enjoyed meeting her siblings for their monthly luncheon at the Concordville Inn, outings with her son John, shopping with her daughter-in-law Bethann, sitting with her grand fur babies, many loving holidays spent with the McClure clan and time with her granddaughters and great-grandchildren Amanda Linn and Alex. While she was more mobile, she would often take trips with Rachael and the great-grandchildren to the movies, theater, aquarium, their activity events and even braved the long drive to Oquossoc Maine to vacation with them. In 2009, Marlene lost her oldest child Linda and, although devastated at the loss of another child, was a pillar of strength for the family as they grieved. Through her remaining years, Marlene persisted with love and spending time doing things and being with the people she enjoyed most. She enjoyed her Saturday visits to the salon, finding helpful kitchen gadgets on QVC for the family and caring for her window plants. As her health declined, she was grateful for the love and care provided by her son and daughter-in-law not only in her last days, but throughout her life. It was John and Bethann who held her hand as she passed. "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal." We will always fondly remember Marlene as a loving and kind daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
