Michael R. Sweeney, aged 71, died July 31, 2016. Born in Allentown, Michael has recently resided in West Chester. He enjoyed boating, backpacking, hiking, woodworking, and traveling the world. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Michael R. Sweeney is a founding partner of his firm, Sweeney and Neary. He graduated from Muhlenberg College, earning a degree in political science; and received his juris doctor from Temple University Beasley School of Law. Mr. Sweeney has practiced law since 1974 but has focused exclusively on matrimonial law since 1980.
In 1985 he was elected to the position of fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, a national organization whose membership is limited to those who are considered by their peers and members of the Bench to be experts in the field of family law. From 1996 to 2002 he served as Judge Pro Tem in family law with the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas.
Mr. Sweeney is listed in the "Best Lawyers of America" (Naify N. Smith), and was given the highest possible rating (AV) in "(Martindale-Hubbell)". He was voted by his peers as one of Pennsylvania's "Super Lawyers". He was recognized in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, and the Legal Intelligencer as one of the premiere matrimonial lawyers in Pennsylvania and in the Philadelphia area.
Mr. Sweeney was a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Family Law Section where he was a member of the Board of Directors for the Family Law Section. He was active in the Delaware County Bar Association having served as Chairman of the Family Law Committee and the Family Law Rules Committee. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Delaware County Bar Association and was Chairman of the Delaware County Long Range Planning Committee and Mastership Committee. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Delaware County Legal Assistant Association.
In 2006 Mr. Sweeney was chosen as the Man of the Year of Delaware County Bar Association and in 2009 he received the Eric D. Turner award from the Delaware County Bar Association Family Law Section. He has received numerous special recognition awards for his service to the Delaware County Bar Association and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
In service to his profession he has served as a lecturer in the area of Family Law for the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association and Delaware County Bar Association. He also taught continuing legal education courses in the area of Family Law at Neumann College. Mr. Sweeney is admitted and licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, District Court and all Courts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Prior to entering the practice of law, Mr. Sweeney served in the United States Navy and is a decorated Vietnam War Veteran. He also served for 10 years as a member of his Township Planning Commission and as a Township Supervisor.
He was the son of the late Jerome and Roberta Best Sweeney and brother of the late Jerry Sweeney.
SURVIVORS: His loving wife of 45 years Elaine Kopecky Sweeney, children Lauren and Michael J. Sweeney (Laya). Sister Mary Ware (Larry). Granddaughter Aurora Elaine Sweeney.
