IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Preston D.
Chambers, Jr.
November 30, 1942 – November 20, 2020
Preston David Chambers, Jr., (Pete), originally from Drexel Hill, PA, passed away peacefully with his family on Friday, November 20th, ten days short of his 78th birthday. Pete was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend to all who knew him. Pete graduated from Monsignor Bonner in 1960 before becoming one of the most prolific basketball scorers in West Chester (State) University's history, including being the all-time career points per game scorer at the height of 5'8". As the leading scorer on the team in one of those seasons (before the college three pointer), he shot an astounding 67% from the field as an outside shooting guard, and was in the top ten in the nation in FT percentage. For his basketball prowess, he was nominated to both the West Chester and the Delaware County Athletes Sports Halls of Fame. Immediately after graduation from West Chester, he was deployed to Vietnam in the Army and was stationed in Asia for several years. Surviving the war and being discharged, Pete enjoyed many happy years dedicated to his wife and two children time living in Claymont, Delaware. He became a beloved teacher and coach in the Penn-Delco School District at both Northley Junior High and Sun Valley High School in Aston, PA for over 30 years, and achieved a college Master's degree during this time as well. After his retirement in 2001, he focused his time on fitness, sports, friends, travel, and most importantly his family, with whom he laughed and loved, and spent a great deal of precious time with his 2 children, as they raised his 5 grandchildren, each of whom he adored. Pete had a kindness, joy and passion for life that endeared him to all that knew him. His drive and work ethic not only made him successful in all of his endeavors, but his insatiable fitness ethic and passion for life helped him stave off the impact of Parkinson's for years; he was happy and enjoyed his life literally until his last few days.
He is survived and will be sorely missed by his son, Chris Chambers, of Devon PA, his wife Denise, and their children Kiera, Phoebe, and Connor; as well as his daughter, Melissa Riggs, of Chadds Ford, PA, and her husband Andrew, and children Olivia and Indiana.
