Obituary

Rita May (McCauley) Smith, age 87, a longtime resident of Drexel Hill, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2019 surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Michigan, but raised in Southwest Philadelphia, Rita was a graduate of Bartram High School. Shortly after graduation, she went to work at General Electric where she met and married the love of her life, and husband of 48 years, Jim Smith (preceeded in death in 2001). Rita worked as the office manager in the family business (James T. Smith Engineering Company) while raising six children - a role she most loved and was proud of.

Affectionately known as Ree-Ree, Reet the Skeet, or G-Money, she enjoyed spending summers in Sea Isle City, mini-vacations to Lake Winola, and traveling the world. She was fortunate to spend great vacations with her family and friends in Ireland, Italy, Spain, and Alaska, and told of great memories visiting each.

At 87 years young, she loved crossword puzzles, watching and playing along to Jeopardy, and watching her favorite shows on the Food Channel and HGTV.

Ree-Ree was always in attendance to all her grandchildren's events and enjoyed being a part of it all. She was the the sweetest, kindest, most caring, and welcoming person you could ever meet. The door to her house was always open and she invited all she met to become part of her family. She was happiest when surrounded by her family during the the holidays, down the Jersey Shore, or sitting out on the deck overlooking the the bay and a great sunset. Ree-Ree loved spending time with friends and family and was a great care giver. She will truly be missed.

Rita was the loving wife of the late James T. Smith; beloved mother of Jim (Barbe) Smith, Patti Smith, Joe Smith, Meg (Ed) Myers, Liz Brown, and Catherine Smith; sister of Peg (Tom) Mulgrew, Lois (the late Charlie) Ryan, and the late Eileen (Irwin) Bonsall; Grandmom to Jim, Corinne, Ryan (Samantha), Ed, Emily, Michael, Maggie, Nick, Ellie, and Cate.
