IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert "Buzzy"
N. Powell
April 1, 1931 – March 16, 2025
Robert N. "Buzzy" Powell, age 93, of Boothwyn PA, passed away at March 16, 2025 at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. Born in Upland, PA, April 1, 1931, he was the second oldest of 6 brothers. He raised his family in Ridley before moving to Boothwyn over 30 years ago. He spent his life on any sports field or court he could find. After playing both offensive and defensive line in football, playing the "enforcer" for basketball, catcher on the baseball team, throwing all 3 events in track and field as well swimming the anchor legs for the swim team, Buzzy left Eddystone High School to pursue a career as a professional baseball player in North Carolina. Buzzy was drafted into the US Army just after WWII and spent 2 years in Germany as a Rec officer, arranging and playing in sports leagues created for the GIs assigned to rebuild post war Germany. He worked at the Scott Paper Company, retiring after 39 years. When he wasn't busy watching his grandkids numerous events, he was enjoying his second 30+ year career officiating football, basketball and softball all over Delaware and Chester Counties, and working the chain gang at Widener University Football games. He loved teaching players and coaches alike about the sports he loved as well as promoting respect for the game. He would often be approached in public by some of the players he officiated who would joyfully fill him in on the life adventures. Buzzy also participated in the senior games every year for bowling and golfing. At the age of 64, he and his Pop (aged 90) won a gold medal in bowling. In the mid 1980s, Buzzy was elected into the Delaware County Sports Hall of Fame as the first multisport athlete. He was also honored by Marcus Hook Sports Hall of Fame and The Ridley Football Boosters. Buzzy never met a stranger and his family would often find him striking up conversations on the boardwalk in Ocean City, New Jersey, on a cruise ship, during his many travels, or at various sporting events with a new "buddy" whom more than likely became a lifelong friend. Buzzy is preceded in death by his parents, Ellen and Norris, all of his brothers, George, Jack, Sonny, Billy and Tommy, and grandson Connor Morse. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Bernice Powell, children, David Powell (Carol), Joann Kelly and Julia Morse (Eric), and grandchildren, David, Samantha, Nathan, and Amanda. Buzzy was a beloved father, grandfather, and a hilarious friend to many. Relatives and close friends are invited to his funeral service, Monday, March 24th, 2025 from 10:00am - 10:45am at Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Eddystone, followed by Mass at 11:00am.
